In tribes Maria, Muria, Bhatra, Parja, Gadva, Halba, Ganda,
Mahra, Chandal, Ghuruva, Dom, Lohar, Matrigond, Rajgond,
Dorla, Nahar, Naikpod, Kuduk, Andkuri, Kumhar, Kosta, Chamar,
Kenvat, Dhakad, were important and in other casts Brahmin,
Vaishya, Kayasth, Teli, Kalar, Kshtriya, Kunbi, Dhobi, Marathi,
Mohammedan, Pathan, Telanga, Orria and Rohilla etc were
important. Currently in Kanker district around 50 percent
of total population is tribal. The most of the culture of
kanker district is tribal dominant. Although in this modern
era the culture has slightly changed.
About two-thirds of the people of Bastar district are
animists and one-third are Hindus. There are very few Muslims
and a lot of converted Christians also.Hindus of the higher
castes are scarce who mostly hail from other states like
Orissa,Andra Pradesh etc. Both Hindus and Gonds to a very
great extent deify the spirits of the forests, hills, trees, soil
etc and both worship the Danteshwari goddess.Next to her
Jagnnath of Orissa commands most respect. But locally Danteshwari
is far above all other deities and the chief of Bastar.
Inspite of these the different tribal groups of Bastar
have their own Gods worshipping in different ways.
The Bhadra tribes respect the cow, worship besides Danteshwari
and other Hindu deities,Budhi -Mata with offerings of Goat,Pig
or Fowl but not liquor. She averts small pox and rinderpest.
The Dhurva/Parja tribes do not have all the same set of
Gods. Some who worship Mati Deo (Earth God) do not worship
either Mata or Danteshwari while others worship all tese.
In Maria Tribes each tribe in its own area are worshipping
its own God .None of these people worship Danteshwari.Their
Gods are represented by two logs of wood placed parallel
to one another and lashed together with a rope made of the
skin of the bamboo with a third piece of wood secured between
them and projecting above the other two.
Budha Deo is the God of the Muria tribes in Kondagaon
Tehsil of Bastar district.Budha Deo is supposed to have
brought the Kondagaon people safely from Raipur into Bastar
on the downfall of the Kigdom of Dhamda. The Muria tribes
worship the Mati Deo (Earth God) and Bhima Devi, the rain
bringer.
